For the past five months, the Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Compact has been running in my office. It’s a smaller room, and the 4 Compact has proven to be a perfect fit – so much so that it has become my benchmark for compact air purifiers. However, one device is often compared to the 4 Compact, and I’ve been curious about if it might be the better fit for a while now: the Levoit Core 300.
The Levoit Core 300 needs little introduction, as it’s been one of the most popular compact air purifiers (and one of the most popular air purifiers overall) on the market for years. The device sits towards the bottom of Levoit’s Core range, above the smaller Core Mini and Core 200S but below the significantly larger Core 400S and Core 600S. Importantly, this review covers the Core 300-P and not the Core 300S. While the two devices look nearly identical, the Core 300S adds app connectivity and smart features for a slightly higher price. But more on that later in this review.
Vesync (the company that owns Levoit) sent me a Core 300 for this review, and I’ve now been using the device for around one month. Throughout that time, it has been in one of two places. Most of my testing took place in my test room (the same room in which I tested all my purifiers), and for the rest of the month, the Core 300 sat in my office either in place of or alongside the 4 Compact. Really, I just wanted to answer one simple question: why is this the most popular air purifier in the world (by my own estimations)?
After a month of testing, I have my answer. The Core 300 also managed to surprise me a couple of times along the way: once in a good way, and once in a way that had me cross-referencing my results with other reviews to ensure I hadn’t made a mistake somewhere. I’ll cover both surprises in the sections below.
In today’s review, I will begin by discussing the performance and filtration of the Core 300 before moving on to its design, its (lack of) connectivity, and finally, its pricing and competition. Performance & Filtration

Before we discuss performance, I want to quickly clear up some naming confusion (because it definitely confused me while writing this review). Alongside the Core 300, you may also come across the Core 300-P, and, as far as I can tell, these are the same device. When I reviewed the Vital 200S-P, Levoit confirmed to me directly that the ‘-P’ suffix is a retail designation rather than different hardware, and everything points to the same being true here. (I once assumed the P stood for ‘pet’, but the pet-focused device in this range is actually the Core P350.)
Practically, the naming only matters when it comes time to buy replacement filters. Levoit’s current filters are sold under the Core 300-P name, and the AHAM verification for the Core 300 covers both the older Core-RF and the newer Core 300-P-RF. In short: whichever name was on your box, you’re looking at the same purifier with the same filters.
Anyway, let’s start with what Levoit claims the Core 300 is capable of. The official specifications list a CADR (clean air delivery rate) of 141 CFM, or 240 m³/h, from a 45W motor. For a device of this size, that’s a strong number, and, as you’ll see soon, it’s not an empty one.
Of course, manufacturer claims are one thing, and independent verification is another. Manufacturers can (and do) publish optimistic numbers, and third-party testing is the easiest way for us to keep them honest. For this reason, I’m always happy to see a device listed on the AHAM Verifide directory, where its performance has been independently tested. Thankfully, the Core 300 is on there. Below, you can see the entries.

These results verify Levoit’s claims, with the AHAM smoke CADR of 143 CFM (243 m³/h) sitting right alongside the official 240 m³/h figure. Interestingly, the Core 300S posts slightly different numbers on the directory, with a smoke CADR of 141 CFM but better dust and pollen performance. The listing also shows an estimated annual energy consumption of 317 kWh – this will be important later as it’s a number I had to double-check.
One detail is worth highlighting here: the AHAM verification only applies with the standard replacement filters (listed as the Core-RF and Core 300-P-RF). Levoit sells several speciality filters for this device too, but the verified figures don’t extend to them.

If you look closely at the AHAM listing, you’ll also notice that the filter type is listed as ‘HEPA-Type’ rather than HEPA. This is an industry term for filters that are constructed like HEPA filters but haven’t been certified to meet the full HEPA standard – in the US, that means capturing at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns. If you’ve followed Levoit over the past few years, you probably know where this is going, but let’s cover the filter itself first.
The Core 300 is a purely mechanical air purifier: air is pulled in through the sides, particles are trapped in the filter media, and clean air exits the top. There are no ionisers, no UV lamps, and no other ‘bonus’ technologies. I see this as a positive, as these extra technologies are often ineffective and, in some cases, can even produce ozone – the last thing you want from a device that’s meant to be cleaning your air!
The standard filter is a three-stage design. Air first passes through a pre-filter that captures hair, dust, and other large particles, then through the main HEPA-type filter, and finally through an activated carbon layer for odours and gases. The whole assembly is a single cylindrical unit that sits in the base of the device. It’s worth noting that the pre-filter is not removable for cleaning.
Alongside the original filter, Levoit sells three speciality variants: a Pet Allergy filter ($35.99), a Toxin Absorber filter ($35.99) aimed at smog and VOCs, and a four-stage Smoke Remover filter ($39.99) with a more substantial activated carbon stage. My unit came with the original filter, which is the filter I used for all of my testing – and, as mentioned above, the only type covered by the AHAM verification.

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room: the HEPA claims. A few years back, Dyson challenged Levoit’s ‘True HEPA’ and H13 marketing through the National Advertising Division, and Vesync ended up permanently discontinuing those claims across several devices, including the Core 300 – while maintaining that the original claims weren’t misleading. I covered this saga in more detail in my Levoit Vital 200S-P review, so I won’t rehash the whole story here.
What I will say is that the messaging is still inconsistent. On the global Levoit site, the H13 claims are gone, and the filters are now described as offering ‘HEPA-grade performance’ in Sleep Mode, tested by an independent lab. However, on my local Levoit site here in the Philippines, the True HEPA H13 claims are still displayed at the time of writing. It’s a mess, and I understand why it’s left many people wary of the brand.
Here’s where I differ from many other reviewers, though: I don’t think HEPA filtration is actually that important in an air purifier. That might sound controversial, but hear me out. Air purifiers don’t clean a room in a single pass. Instead, they circulate the air and filter it over multiple passes, which is why the common recommendation is to aim for 4-5 air changes per hour. A device that moves more air through a slightly less efficient filter will generally clean a room better than a device that moves less air through a marginally better filter. In practice, airflow matters far more than single-pass filtration efficiency.
Would I prefer that Levoit hadn’t marketed these filters as something they’re not? Absolutely. The false marketing is a real issue, and I can understand anyone who lost trust in the brand over it. However, when it comes to actual performance, I don’t see the lack of certified HEPA filtration as a significant problem – especially considering the AHAM results and, as you’re about to see, my own tests.
Speaking of which, let’s get to those tests. My process is the same one I use for every air purifier I review: I burn incense in my 29.4 m³ test room until the PM2.5 concentration reaches roughly 500 µg/m³, wait for the incense to burn out, then trigger the purifier remotely and record how long the concentration takes to fall below 5 µg/m³. Readings come from an AirGradient ONE (I-9PSL, factory calibrated), and each speed gets three runs so that I’m not drawing conclusions from a single decay curve. For the exact specifics of my test room and methodology, please refer to my Levoit Vital 200S-P review.
Before we get to the numbers, the usual caveats apply. My test room is a real room with furniture, air gaps, and surfaces for particles to settle on, not a sealed laboratory chamber, so my figures won’t line up exactly with lab results, and a difference here doesn’t mean the manufacturer is wrong. Further, incense skews towards smaller particles compared to the test dust and smoke used in chamber testing. While this testing isn’t scientific, I test every device under the same conditions in the same room, which makes the comparisons between devices meaningful.

With that out of the way: the Levoit Core 300 performed fantastically. At maximum speed, it took my test room from 500 µg/m³ to 5 µg/m³ in just under 27 minutes (26:42, the median of three runs), passing the halfway point in under five minutes (4:52). Fitting the decay curves gives a measured CADR of 258 m³/h – about 7.5% above Levoit’s claimed 240 m³/h. The three runs were also very consistent, as you can see from the run-to-run range in the chart below. Where the larger Vital 200S-P came in around 9% below its claimed CADR in my testing, the Core 300 actually beat its claim.
At half speed (level 2 on the device), the measured CADR dropped to 142 m³/h, with the room taking 49:41 to fully clear. This is a more realistic setting for everyday use, as maximum speed is something you’ll likely reserve for quick cleans rather than hours-long sessions.
So, how does the Core 300 compare to the other compact purifiers I’ve tested? In short: it’s the best-performing device in this size class I’ve tested to date.

The Core 300 cleared my test room just over five minutes faster than the Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Compact (26:42 vs 32:01). Xiaomi officially rates the 4 Compact at 230 m³/h, and I measured it at 216 m³/h – both well below the Core 300’s measured 258 m³/h. The Levoit also beat the pet-focused Pawtent Pro, which took 28:43 to clean the same room. The only device to finish faster was the Xiaomi 4 Lite at 21:02, but that’s a significantly larger device in a higher price bracket, and I’ve included it for context rather than as a direct competitor.
At half speed, the story is closer, and the Core 300 cleaned my room in a similar time to the 4 Compact running at its own half speed. However, at maximum speed, the Levoit is significantly more powerful. Overall, I was quite impressed with the results here – the Core 300 packs a good amount of power for a smaller device, and its raw performance is hard to fault at this size.

That being said, always remember to use the Core 300 within its limitations. It’s a small device intended for a smaller room, and AHAM’s recommended room size of 222 ft² (about 21 m²) is a good guide. Design

Let’s start with the physical basics. The Core 300 is a cylinder measuring 22 x 22 x 36 cm (8.7 x 8.7 x 14.2 inches), and it weighs 3.39 kg (7.48 lbs). On paper, that’s almost exactly the same footprint as the Xiaomi 4 Compact, which measures 22 x 22 x 35.5 cm. In the hand, however, the two feel very different, because the Xiaomi weighs just 2.2 kg.
Honestly, the weight was one of the first things that surprised me about this device. Perhaps I was simply used to the much lighter 4 Compact, but the Core 300 is heavy for its size – over a kilogram heavier than a device with a near-identical footprint. Then again, maybe that heft is part of what allows it to outperform the Compact so significantly. You never know.
Beyond the weight, this is a relatively bare unit with a minimal design, with the exception of the display up top, which is quite busy (more on that soon). As with most cylindrical purifiers, the Core 300 intakes air 360 degrees around the bottom of the device and exhausts it out of the top. For this reason, make sure you place the device with some space on every side, as this will allow it to perform at its best.
One design decision worth noting is the non-removable power cable. If the cable gets damaged, whether by pets or otherwise, you will be looking at replacing the whole unit rather than just a cord. If you have a chewer in the house, keep this in mind.

On the bottom of the device, you can rotate the base plate to access the filter for cleaning or replacement. Unlike the 4 Compact, where the filter is attached to the base plate itself, the Core 300 has a separate plate that you must remove before you can reach the filter, and it’s quite easy to accidentally dislodge the filter in the process. I prefer the Xiaomi approach here, but it’s a very small thing.
That being said, the filter itself is very easily replaced. I also appreciate the foam seal on top of the filter, which helps to close any gaps and ensure air isn’t bypassing the filter media – a small detail, but one that matters more than it might seem.
On top of the device, you will find the touch-sensitive display that controls everything. From here, you can power the device on and off with the central button, set the fan speed (manual levels 1-3, plus a sleep mode), set a 2, 4, 6 or 8 hour timer, enable or disable the backlight, and lock the panel by holding the lock button for a few seconds. There is also a filter indicator that lights up when the filter needs replacing. For a device this simple, that’s a busy panel, and it covers all of the essentials.

Importantly, these controls are the entire interface. There is no app, no auto mode, and no connectivity of any kind – if you want those features, Levoit will point you towards the Core 300S. I’ll discuss whether that trade-off makes sense in the pricing section.
Overall, the Core 300 is a simple device design-wise, and I suspect this simplicity is a big part of how Levoit keeps the price down. I have no real qualms here. Really, the only thing that stood out to me, again, was the weight – it’s a heavy little thing!
Measured at one metre. Sleep is left out: every unit read within a couple of dBA of the room's own noise floor at its lowest setting, which measures the room rather than the purifier.
Before finishing this section, let’s talk about sound. Testing the sound level from one metre away, I measured 59 dBA at maximum speed and 47 dBA at half speed (level 2). This is a few dBA louder than the Xiaomi 4 Compact at its comparable speeds, although you are also getting significantly more clean air for that noise. Admittedly, you will probably want to run the device on level 1 or sleep mode in a bedroom, as 47 dBA is still definitely audible.
It’s also worth remembering that larger devices such as the Levoit Vital 200S-P or Xiaomi 4 Lite can manage far more filtration at similar sound levels. Of course, that’s expected – more intake area and a larger fan mean a device doesn’t have to work as hard for the same output. Within its own size class, the Core 300’s noise levels are reasonable for the performance on offer.
Pricing & Competition

The Levoit Core 300 has a list price of $99.99, and it can regularly be found for less – discounts into the $80-90 range are common. In this price bracket, the most direct competitor is the device I’ve been comparing it to throughout this review: the Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Compact. The Xiaomi offers less raw power, but it counters with app connectivity, an auto mode, and (as you’ll see below) significantly lower running costs.
Levoit’s own lineup provides the other two devices worth considering. The Core 200S sits below the Core 300 at around $79-89, and interestingly, it’s actually the smarter device – it has app connectivity despite the lower price. However, with an AHAM-verified CADR of 118 CFM (around 200 m³/h), it moves noticeably less air and is best suited to smaller rooms. Above the Core 300 sits the Core 300S, officially priced at $149.99 in its current 300S-P form. For that extra $50, you get app control, an auto mode driven by a built-in PM2.5 sensor, and a significantly more efficient motor. Whether that’s worth it depends on the running costs, so let’s get into those.

As with my other recent reviews, I’ll look at ongoing costs in two parts: filters and electricity. Replacement filters for the Core 300 start at $30 for the original filter and go up to $40 depending on which variant you choose. Levoit recommends replacing them every 6-12 months, and as always, I plan around the shorter end of a manufacturer’s stated range. At $30 every six months, you’re looking at around $60 per year on filters.

Electricity is where things get interesting, and this is the number that had me cross-referencing my results with other reviews. Measuring at the wall, I found the Core 300 draws 35W at maximum speed, 24W at medium (level 2), and 2W in sleep mode. At first, I couldn’t quite believe the medium figure, but my results are in line with other published tests – HouseFresh measured 35.5W at maximum and 24W at level 2, nearly identical to my numbers.
For context, the Xiaomi 4 Compact draws 25W at maximum, 9W at medium, and 2W in sleep mode. At the speed you’re most likely to actually use day-to-day, the Core 300 draws over two and a half times the power of its closest competitor. It also explains the AHAM listing’s estimated annual energy consumption of 317 kWh, which is roughly what you’d get running the Core 300 at maximum speed around the clock.

Using my usual assumptions (half speed, twelve hours a day, at $0.29/kWh), the Core 300 costs around $30 per year in electricity, while the 4 Compact costs around $11. Over five years, that’s roughly a $95 difference – almost the price of another Core 300. Electricity is normally a very small part of the ongoing costs of running a purifier, but that isn’t the case here. For the size of the device, this is a lot of power.
This is also where the Core 300S becomes hard to ignore. The 300S uses a much more efficient motor, drawing just 21.8W at maximum speed in HouseFresh’s testing – around 40% cheaper to run than the Core 300 over a year. Once you factor in the running costs, the $50 price gap between the two devices begins to shrink, and depending on the discounts available, the Core 300S may well be the better long-term investment.

Conclusion – Is the Core 300 Worth It?

After a month with the Core 300, would I recommend it? Yes, but with one caveat. Let’s begin with what this device does well, because it does one thing very well indeed.
For raw cleaning performance at this price, the Core 300 is close to unbeatable. It cleared my 29.4 m³ test room in 26:42 at maximum speed and measured 258 m³/h against a claimed 240 m³/h, making it the best-performing device in this size class I’ve tested to date. In this way, it reminds me a lot of the AirFanta 3Pro. Neither device is clever, and neither will impress anyone with its feature list, but both move a genuinely surprising amount of air for the money. If your budget is tight and you simply want a room cleaned, that counts for a great deal.
However, the lack of connectivity hurts the Core 300 more than I anticipated. There’s no app, no auto mode, and no sensor of any kind – what you get is a touch panel on the top of the device and nothing else. For a purifier you plan to leave running in one room at one speed, that’s fine. For anyone who wants the device to respond to their air rather than to their finger, it simply can’t.
The bigger issue is one that only appears when you look further out than the purchase price. At 24W on level 2, the Core 300 costs around $30 a year to run in electricity, against roughly $18 for the far more efficient Core 300S. With a $50 price gap between the two devices and filters that cost the same, the 300S catches up in around four years and is the cheaper device from there onwards. That’s an unusual thing to write about a purifier – electricity is normally a rounding error next to filter costs – but it’s the reality with this particular motor. It also makes the Core 300 harder to recommend than its performance alone would suggest.
So, where does that leave things? I’d put it like this. If you want cleaning performance and genuinely don’t need the smart features, the Core 300 is a great purchase, and you’ll be getting more air movement per dollar than almost anything else at this size. The same applies if you simply can’t spend the extra $50 right now – this is a very capable device, and nobody buying one is making a mistake.
That being said, if you can stretch to it, the Core 300S is the one I’d point most people towards. It’s cheaper to run, it adds the app and auto mode that the Core 300 lacks, and it performs almost identically (AHAM lists it at 141 CFM against the Core 300’s 143). Find it on sale and it becomes an easy recommendation.
The Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Compact is worth a look too, as it tends to sit around $100-120. It’s slightly behind on performance – I measured 216 m³/h against the Core 300’s 258, and it took just over five minutes longer to clear the same room – but you get app connectivity and an auto mode for that money, and it costs far less to run.
Finally, as with every small purifier, please keep this device’s limitations in mind. AHAM’s recommended room size of 222 ft² (about 21 m²) is a sensible guide, and no amount of raw CADR changes the fact that this is a device built for smaller rooms. If you’re trying to cover a living area or an open-plan space, buy a bigger purifier rather than asking this one to do a job it was never designed for.

No. Levoit permanently discontinued its True HEPA and H13 claims for this device following a challenge from Dyson, and AHAM’s directory lists the filter as ‘HEPA-Type’. In practice this matters far less than airflow does, and the Core 300’s measured performance is excellent regardless.
What Size Room Is the Levoit Core 300 Good For?
AHAM recommends 222 ft², or about 21 m². It will work in a larger space, but you’ll get fewer air changes per hour, so I’d stick close to that figure for a bedroom or home office.
