When I was working out which air purifiers to buy for our house earlier this year, a few brand names kept coming up, and Levoit was one I couldn’t get away from. They’re everywhere in this space. Ask for a purifier recommendation (especially in the low-mid budget range) on Reddit and someone will suggest a Levoit within a couple of replies, and the reviews are generally positive. In the end I went with Xiaomi, but that was mostly because of what the pricing looks like here in the Philippines and how easy the devices are to get hold of locally.
So when Levoit got in touch recently, I was curious. Here was a chance to find out whether the devices seemingly everyone recommends actually hold up when I put them through the same tests I run on everything else. I guess I don’t want to spoil the review straight away, but I did get an inkling of where the positive comments are coming from.
Before we move on, however, it’s worth mentioning that there’s also one other thing Levoit is well-known for. A few years back, Dyson challenged their HEPA marketing claims, and it turned into a bit of a mess for the brand. The HEPA claims have since been pulled from the filters and purifiers, and most people seem to have moved on (not Reddit, mind you). What I wanted to know, though, is whether that whole saga ended up overshadowing what are still perfectly good purifiers.
With that background out of the way, I’ve spent the last month testing both the Levoit Vital 200S-P and the Core 300. That’s meant a lot of incense (over 100 sticks!), a lot of decay curves, and a lot of sitting in a room with a sound meter. The 200S-P has also been living in our bedroom for most of the time when I wasn’t actively pushing its limits, which is the part of testing a device you can’t really shortcut. Numbers tell you how fast something clears a room, but only living with a device tells you whether you’d actually want it there. Here’s what I found.

Before anything else, a note on the naming because it confused me for a while. The Vital 200S-P and the plain Vital 200S are the exact same machine, and Levoit confirmed this to me directly when I asked. You can see it in the part numbers too, since both take the Vital 200S-RF filter and both carry the LAP-V201S model code. The P is a retail designation rather than different hardware (I’d assumed the ‘P’ had something to do with a pet variant, but I was wrong). Therefore, anything that applies to the 200S applies to the 200S-P too.
So what does Levoit claim the Vital 200S-P is capable of? Well, the headline figure is a CADR of 250 CFM for smoke, which is equal to about 425 m³/h. The AHAM certificate also lists 254 CFM for dust and 289 CFM for pollen, so roughly 432 and 491 m³/h depending on the particle type and size. I was able to verify this on the AHAM database, which is a great start as it’s an independent third-party evaluation body.

Unfortunately, the coverage statements are where things get a bit slippery. Levoit’s own spec sheet gives two numbers: 173 m² at one air change per hour, and 36 m² at 4.8 air changes. Both are honest, and I appreciate that they publish the more realistic number (unlike some manufactures…). However, the number that ends up in the product title on Amazon is the 173 m² (1875 square ft) figure, and one air change an hour is close to meaningless for a room you actually use. If you want a purifier to hold particle levels down while a room is being lived in, four to five changes an hour is the range worth aiming for. So treat 36 m² as the real coverage figure for this device. If you’re curious about what CADR you need for a room, you can use the tool below to find out.
Now, let’s take a look at the filter itself. The Vital 200S-RF filter has three-stage filtration with the following layers:
- A washable nylon pre-filter across the front, which catches hair, lint and larger fur before it reaches anything else.
- The main filter, rated to capture at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns. Again, this isn’t a HEPA filter, but it doesn’t necessarily need to be.
- An activated carbon layer for odours and VOCs. This layer is pelleted carbon bonded to the particulate layer rather than a carbon-dusted mesh, which means considerably more adsorptive material than you get on some filters.

The filter contains 250g of pelleted coconut-shell activated carbon.
That middle filter is the part that’s still somewhat confusing. While Levoit no longer advertises this as True HEPA or H13 since Dyson challenged the claim through the National Advertising Division, Levoit says now is that the filter is HEPA-grade in Sleep Mode, tested by an independent lab to IEST RP CC001.7. HEPA classification depends on efficiency at a given particle velocity, so pushing more air through the same media makes efficiency drop. I interpret this to mean that the filter can meet H13 filtration requirements (99.95% to 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns in diameter) at very low fan speeds, but that the filter can’t meet these filtration requirements at higher speeds.
Is that a problem? Honestly, not necessarily. With an air purifier, single-pass efficiency often matters less than how much air you move through the filter. A purifier at 99.97% single-pass running at half the airflow of one at 99% will clean a room more slowly. Purifiers are not intended to function like respirators or filters in positive pressure systems. What bothers me more here are the claims that, while probably correct, will probably mislead some people.
What I’ll give Levoit real credit for is the AHAM Verifide certification. AHAM is an independent, ANSI-accredited body, and its listing means the CADR figures were measured in a third-party chamber to a published standard rather than generated in-house and rounded up. Few of the purifiers I’ve tested carry it. You can check the entry yourself in AHAM’s directory.

With all of this said, I’ve tested enough devices to know that manufacturer numbers are a starting point and nothing more, and I’ve had purifiers land well short of what the box promised. So I put the Vital 200S-P in my ‘test chamber’ (spare bedroom) and tested it as I do every other purifier I review.
Every purifier I test goes through the same routine in the same room, which is a spare bedroom of 29.4 m³. I burn incense until PM2.5 reaches roughly 500 µg/m³, wait for the incense to burn out, then trigger the purifier remotely and record how long the concentration takes to fall below 5 µg/m³. All the readings come from an AirGradient ONE I-9PSL sitting in the room, not from the purifier’s own sensor. Each speed gets run several times so I’m not drawing conclusions from a single decay curve.

At maximum speed the Vital 200S-P took the room from 500 µg/m³ to under 5 in about 19 minutes. Speed level 2, which is roughly half, needed 42 minutes. Sleep mode took 86. The runs at each speed landed close together, so I’m confident these aren’t flukes.
Fitting the exponential portion of those curves gives a measured CADR of 387 m³/h at max. Levoit claims 425 m³/h and the AHAM certificate backs that, and I came in around 9% under. Incense is skewed towards smaller particles compared to the test dust and cigarette smoke used in chamber testing, and my spare bedroom is a real room with furniture, air gaps and surfaces for particles to settle on rather than a sealed test chamber. If you want a purifier that does what the box says, this one does. So, good in isolation. But how does it stack up against what else has been through that room?

It slots in between the two Xiaomi units. The Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6 measured 453 m³/h and the Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Lite managed 350, which lines up with their claimed figures of 443 and 360. So the Levoit sits comfortably in the middle of the pair. The Core 300 is in the chart mainly as a reference point, as many people wonder whether stepping up from the lower-end Core series devices to the Vital series is worth it. Overall, for the money, this is a good result.

Two other things about the filtration are worth mentioning before moving on. The washable pre-filter has been incredibly useful. We have six cats. Fur gets everywhere, and on a cylindrical purifier it clogs the main filter directly, which means you’re replacing an expensive filter early because of something a mesh screen could have caught. Here I rinse the pre-filter under the tap, let it dry, and the main filter carries on doing its actual job. This can save a substantial amount over the long run.
I also like that this is purely mechanical filtration. No UV lamp, no ioniser, and no plasma anything. Those additions tend to contribute little next to the filter itself while introducing ozone questions, and I’d rather have a fan pulling air through good media than a marketing feature bolted onto the side.

Sensor & Accuracy

The PM sensor inlets on this purifier get surprisingly dirty. I found myself cleaning them regularly and also cleaned them right before running the test below!
I always give the sensors in purifiers particular attention both because my background is with air quality monitors and because the sensor is what drives auto mode. If the readings are wrong, then every decision the purifier makes on its own is wrong too. The Vital 200S-P is no different.
This is an infrared dust sensor, meaning it’s not as accurate as the sensor in the more expensive Core 400S and Core 600S, which both get a laser sensor instead. Infrared sensors are generally far less accurate, and you’ll see some examples of that soon.
I asked Levoit what PM2.5 concentrations trigger a speed change in auto mode, and they told me they can’t share the thresholds the device uses. I spent a good while looking for them myself, but they don’t seem to be published anywhere. The manual gives colours and nothing else, with blue for very good, green for good, orange for moderate and red for bad, and no concentrations attached to any of them. The equivalent bands for the laser-sensor Core 600S are provided (blue below 35 µg/m³, green 36 to 75, orange 76 to 115, and red above 115), but there’s nothing similar for the Vital. The app is the same story, giving you a relative description of air quality rather than a measurement. However, considering how lenient the Core 600S scores are, I wouldn’t expect anything useful here.
Luckily for me, In Home Assistant, the VeSync integration exposes the raw value the app is hiding from you, and the numbers are pretty bad. The overreporting is the most obvious part. During spikes, when my dedicated monitors read 100 to 150 µg/m³, the Levoit sat above 600. At the other end of the scale it regularly shows around 20 µg/m³ while a dedicated sensor a metre away reads under 5. On its own I could live with that. A purifier that thinks the air is worse than it is runs harder than it needs to, but it errs in the right direction. What I can’t get past is that the sensor reports spikes that never happened.

The graph above shows the Vital 200S-P reporting a spike above 400 µg/m³ while my air quality monitor, sitting right next to it, showed 20. Both were in my closed test room at the time, so there was nothing one sensor could plausibly have caught and the other missed. I only found this because the purifier kept ramping up on auto mode when my monitors showed no change at all. Once I checked the history properly, it turned out these phantom spikes happen relatively often.
The upshot is that I wouldn’t run this purifier on auto mode. The sensor invents pollution events, and I don’t know what thresholds auto mode is working to, so I’ve no idea what standard it’s holding my air to. Admittedly the second point is irrelevant, since a sensor this inaccurate couldn’t reliably follow a guideline even if I knew which one it was aiming at. If you have dedicated monitors, automate it from those instead. If you don’t, pick a fan speed you’re happy with and leave it there.
Design

If I had to describe the shape of the Vital 200S-P, I would say that it is a chunky rectangle. It’s wider than it is deep, and it stands 50.2 cm tall by 39.6 cm wide and 21.7 cm deep. It also weighs about 6 kg. So it takes up more floor space than a cylindrical unit of similar output while sitting lower, which sounds like a drawback but could be an advantage depending on where you want to place it.
That leads to the most consequential design decision here. The Vital 200S-P only pulls air in from the front, and exhausts it out the top. Cylindrical (when I say cylindrical, I mean the filter!) purifiers draw from all sides, which is great in the middle of a room and much less great anywhere else, because pushing one against a wall blocks a chunk of the intake and you lose CADR you paid for. Our bedroom doesn’t have space to put a purifier in the middle of the floor, so it has to go against a wall. For that, a front-facing intake is a big benefit.
At the front, the mesh panel is broken up by a U-shaped vent running around the bottom and up both sides, and this is the part designed for pet hair. Larger stuff gets pulled through the U rather than plastering itself across the mesh. While some still collects on the front the difference is obvious next to my Xiaomi purifiers, which turn into hairballs within a few weeks in this house. The Levoit stays presentable for much longer. Again, minor, but I am not a big fan of cleaning the outer mesh every few weeks.

The whole front panel comes off with a gentle pull, and behind it you have the washable pre-filter and the main filter. Filter changes take under a minute, and there’s no fiddling with clips or splitting the device in half like the Xiaomi 4 Lite makes you do.
On the left-hand side sits the PM sensor. And on both sides, the top of that U doubles as a handle, which is one of those design choices that make the device just slightly nicer to own and use. Six kilos is heavy enough that you want somewhere to grip, and I find the Levoit Vital 200S-P to be much easier to move than the other purifiers we have around the house.

Round the back, the power cable detaches from the unit rather than being hardwired in. Another minor thing, and I doubt it appears on anyone’s shortlist, but it makes the purifier much easier to move between rooms without trailing a metre of cable behind it, and it means a chewed or damaged cord is a cheap replacement instead of a dead purifier. Given how many devices I’ve seen written off by a failed cable, I’ll take it.

The control panel lives on the top surface, and from there you can switch modes, cycling through auto, sleep and speeds one to four, lock the panel, set a timer, turn the unit on or off, and kill the backlights. Here, two small things that stood out. The first is a light sensor that dims the panel automatically when the room goes dark. It sounds trivial, but I actually grew to appreciate it quite a lot.
The second is the lock button, and this one I’m less keen on. It works as designed, but our cats sleep on top of the purifier at times, and a cat settling down on a warm flat surface is more than capable of locking or unlocking the panel with an paw. I’ve come back to find the device locked, unlocked, and on one occasion switched off mid-afternoon. Not a fault necessarily, and not something most households will run into because having six cats is a self-inflicted problem.

Before I forget, let’s take a look at the sound levels. Levoit quotes a range of 23 to 54 dB for the Vital 200S-P, so let’s see how that holds up. I measure sound with a decibel meter placed one metre from the device, which is roughly the distance a purifier sits from you if it’s beside a desk or at the end of a bed.
At maximum speed I recorded 60 dBA. That’s a fair bit above Levoit’s quoted ceiling, though I’d note that manufacturers rarely specify their measurement distance and mine is deliberately close. It also came in a touch louder than the other purifiers I compared it against, which you can see in the graph below. The gap is small enough that I doubt you’d notice it in practice. At full speed every purifier in this class is loud, and the difference between 58 and 60 dBA is far less noticeable than the fact that you’ve got a fan running at full tilt in the room with you.
Sleep is left out: every unit read within a couple of dBA of the room's own noise floor at its lowest setting, which measures the room rather than the purifier.
Speed level 2 is where the device actually spends its time, and here the Levoit wins. I measured 43 dBA against competitors reaching up to 47 dBA at their equivalent settings. Four decibels doesn’t sound like much written down, though the decibel scale being logarithmic means the difference is more meaningful than the number suggests. In use it’s the difference between background noise you stop registering and noise that keeps pulling your attention back. I’ve had the device running at speed 2 many nights near the foot of our bed and it hasn’t bothered me.
I couldn’t test sleep mode because the noise floor of my test room sits at 37 to 38 dBA, and Levoit’s quoted minimum of 23 dB is well below that. My meter has nothing to measure. All I can tell you is that in sleep mode the device is quiet enough that I lose track of whether it’s running.
Connectivity & Application

The S in Vital 200S-P stands for Smart, and in practice that means connectivity over WiFi and the VeSync app. Setup was painless. You download VeSync, make an account, hold the power button until the purifier goes into pairing mode, and the app picks it up. Mine connected on the first try and took about two minutes from opening the box to having the device on my phone. I’ve had far worse experiences with smart home devices that cost more than this one.
Once the purifier is on your account you can link it to Alexa or Google Home through the app, and both work much the way you would expect, allowing for voice control of basic device functions. What matters more to me is that it also works with Home Assistant. Levoit devices run through the VeSync integration, which is built into Home Assistant (rather than being a custom component you have to install through HACS), and the Vital 200S is listed by name as a supported model. It exposes a good number of entities once it’s set up, covering fan speed, mode, filter life remaining, the panel lock and the air quality reading. I have mine automated with my air quality monitors rather than the purifier’s own sensor, which is a setup I’d recommend to anyone running both.

One thing to know is that the integration polls VeSync’s cloud rather than talking to the purifier over your local network. So it needs an internet connection to work, and it has broken in the past when VeSync changed their authentication. If local control matters to you, this isn’t the purifier for you, though I’d point out that the same is true of most devices in this price bracket.
The app itself is one of the better manufacturer apps I’ve used. It loads quickly (tested on iOS), the home screen shows you your registered devices, and tapping into any device gives an air quality overview and current status. Here you can switch between auto, sleep, pet mode and the four manual fan speeds, lock the control panel remotely, and toggle the light detection that dims the display at night.

Scheduling is where VeSync goes further than most applications. Plenty of purifier apps give you a basic timer and a few triggers. Here you can build multi-stage routines that change behaviour over the course of a night. Mine runs a burst at a higher speed for the first 30 minutes after sleep mode starts, which clears whatever the room has accumulated during the evening, then drops to level 1 for an hour, then holds sleep mode until morning. Setting that up took a couple of minutes and I haven’t touched it since. You can also create standard schedules for particular times of day and set simple countdown timers, so if you want the purifier running hard while you cook and then backing off afterwards, that’s straightforward.
There is also a second ‘Device Settings’ menu that houses a few additional options. You can rename the device, change its icon, edit your account details and open a device information page with the firmware version and MAC address. More usefully, there’s a filter life estimate that counts down as you run the device, and a separate reminder you can set for washing the pre-filter. With six cats the pre-filter needs attention every few weeks, and I appreciate being reminded because I’d forget otherwise.

There’s one part of the app I’m glad exists but wouldn’t rely on, and that’s the air quality data. Being able to pull up a history of PM readings in a purifier app is a nice thing to have, and many apps forego this and just show current readings instead. The problem is the sensor feeding it. Compared against my dedicated air quality monitors, the Vital 200S-P consistently reads high, and by a very significant amount. For this reason, I only read trends from the graph. It’ll tell you that PM went up when you started cooking and came back down twenty minutes later, which is useful, but it won’t tell you what your PM2.5 concentration actually is.
Connectivity ends up being one of the stronger parts of this purifier. The app is good enough that I’ve been using it as my main control method even though I have Home Assistant running, which isn’t something I can say about most devices. The Alexa integration is also worth a mention because it gives you control over individual fan speeds by voice. Several of the Xiaomi purifiers I’ve used only let you toggle between two or three modes with voice, and that often isn’t enough.
Cost & Competition
The Vital 200S-P has a list price of $189, though Levoit runs sales quite often. At the time of writing it’s $169.99 on Levoit’s own site, and it drops further during the usual sale periods. Call it $170 to $190 depending on when and where you buy.
That puts it at the lower end of mid-range. It’s not competing with the $120-$150 units like the Xiaomi 4 Compact or the Levoit Core 300S, and it’s nowhere near the $500 Dyson and Blueair territory. What you’re paying for is a device with a genuine AHAM certification, WiFi, a sensor, and enough airflow to handle a decent sized room.

The number I care about more than the sticker price is cost per unit of CADR, because that tells you how much clean air you’re actually buying. At $189 and 425 m³/h, the Vital 200S-P works out to about $0.44 per m³/h. Here’s how that compares to a few devices in the same bracket:
- Winix 5530: AHAM verified at 253 CFM smoke, or 430 m³/h. At a typical street price of around $200 that’s roughly $0.47 per m³/h. The catch is that Winix pricing swings wildly, and I’ve seen the 5520 with identical internals at $140, which would bring it to $0.33 and make it the better buy on this metric alone.
- Coway Airmega AP-1512HH: 246 CFM smoke, or about 418 m³/h, and usually sits around $180. That’s $0.43 per m³/h, so essentially level with the Levoit.
- Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6: 443 m³/h claimed, and I can buy it here for about $170. That’s $0.38 per m³/h, the best of the group.
So on purchase price alone the Levoit is competitive without being a standout. It’s in the same cluster as the Winix and the Coway, and slightly behind the Mijia. Nothing here should push you towards or away from it. Where the picture changes is when you keep running the thing.
The filter is the problem. A genuine Vital 200S-RF costs around $40, and Levoit rates it for 6 to 12 months. I always plan around the shorter end of a manufacturer’s stated range, partly because that’s usually closer to reality and partly because I’d rather budget high and be pleasantly surprised. With six cats in the house 6 months is also more likely the honest figure for us, even with the pre-filter doing its job. So that’s $80 a year in filters.

Electricity is the better news, and this is one area where the Levoit beat both Xiaomi units in my testing. I measured actual power draw, and at speed level 2, which is where the device spends most of its life in our bedroom, it’s pulling a small enough load that a full year of continuous running comes to about $11. It’s also worth mentioning that this will be cheaper for many people as I used a conservative energy price. Running the purifier 24 hours a day for a year costs about the same as a couple of coffees.
Add those together and the one-year running cost at speed 2 comes to roughly $90. That’s not terrible by any means, but it’s more than the Xiaomi devices, where filters run a bit cheaper. Over three years you’re looking at $270 in running costs on top of the $189 purchase, which means the filters will have cost you significantly more than what the purifier did.

For context, the Winix 5530 uses the Filter Q at about $79 on a 12-month cycle (or so they claim), so it’s cheaper to run than the Levoit despite costing more up front. If you’re planning to keep a purifier for years rather than months, that difference matters more than the $20 you saved at checkout.
Of course, this is all dependent on where you live. I quoted the Mijia 6 at $170 because that’s what I can buy it for in the Philippines. It isn’t officially available in the US or EU, and where it does turn up through importers it costs considerably more, which erases the advantage entirely. Filters for Xiaomi devices are also easy for me to get here and much harder elsewhere. So the comparison I ran above is my comparison, in my market, and it won’t necessarily be yours.
For most people reading this in the US, Canada, the UK or Europe, the Vital 200S-P isn’t competing with Xiaomi at all. It’s competing with Winix, Coway, Blueair and Levoit’s own Core series. Against that field it holds up well. You get smart features the Winix 5500-2 never had, a better app than any of them, a certified CADR that’s genuinely competitive, and a purely mechanical filter with no ioniser attached. The filter cost is the weak point, and it’s a real one, but it’s not out of line with what Coway and Blueair charge either.
Conclusion: Is the Levoit 200S-P Worth it?

So where does all of this leave me? The Levoit Vital 200S-P has replaced the Xiaomi 4 Lite in our master bedroom, and it’s been there ever since I finished the formal testing. That wasn’t the plan, and I think it says a lot about my thoughts on the device.
There are a few reasons for this. It’s quieter at medium speed, which is the speed our bedroom purifier lives at. The front-facing intake means I can push it against a wall without losing airflow, and our bedroom simply doesn’t have room for a purifier standing in open floor space. The washable pre-filter keeps the fur out, which in our house is not a small thing and It has a higher CADR than the 4 Lite too, though it costs more.
On raw performance it’s comparable to the other purifiers in its price bracket. I measured 387 m³/h against a claimed 425, which is close enough to call the claim honest (though AHAM already did that!), and results that sat neatly between the Mijia 6 and the 4 Lite where the specs said they should. Nothing surprising, nothing disappointing.
What lifts it above the pack is everything around the fan. The design is thought through in ways that only become obvious after a few weeks of living with it, from the handles moulded into the U-vent to the light sensor that dims the panel at night to the detachable power cable. VeSync is one of the better manufacturer apps I’ve used, the scheduling goes further than most, and the Home Assistant support and Alexa skill both work properly rather than being a checkbox on a spec sheet. That combination is hard to find at this price.
My complaints come down to two things. The PM sensor reads high enough that I wouldn’t trust auto mode to make sensible decisions, which is frustrating on a device that otherwise gets the smart features right. And the filters cost more than I’d like. That second point is heavily market dependent, and against Winix, Coway or Blueair in Western markets the difference shrinks considerably, so run the numbers for wherever you are. Here in the Philippines, at $40 a filter with a realistic 6-month life, it adds up quite quickly.

Is the Levoit Vital 200S-P the same as the Vital 200S?
Yes, they’re the same machine. Levoit confirmed this to me directly, and you can see it in the part numbers too, since both take the Vital 200S-RF filter and both carry the LAP-V201S model code. The P is a retail designation rather than different hardware.
Does the Vital 200S-P use a real HEPA filter?
Levoit dropped its True HEPA and H13 claims after Dyson challenged them through the National Advertising Division, and now says the filter is HEPA-grade in Sleep Mode, tested by an independent lab. My reading is that it meets H13 requirements at very low fan speeds but not at higher ones, which matters far less than you’d think because clean air delivery is a product of efficiency and airflow, not efficiency alone.
What room size will it actually cover?
Around 36 m² (390 sq ft). The 173 m² figure in the Amazon title is measured at one air change per hour, which is close to meaningless for a room you’re sitting in. Four to five air changes an hour is the range worth aiming for, and Levoit’s own spec sheet publishes 36 m² at 4.8 changes.
Should I use auto mode on the Vital 200S-P?
I wouldn’t. The infrared PM sensor overreports badly and regularly logs spikes that never happened, so the device ends up reacting to pollution that isn’t there. Levoit also won’t share the thresholds auto mode uses, so you can’t know what standard it’s holding your air to. If you have dedicated air quality monitors, automate it from those instead.
